"Ah, you don't have to thank me," Sam shrugs off, throwing a good-natured smile over his shoulder, corners of his eyes crinkling, as he finishes chopping up the vegetables. He tosses them into the waiting pan, giving them a stir. Above the sizzle, he continues, "I'm just bein' neighborly."

Neighborly, he guesses, is one word for it. How anybody could let the young detective get this hungry-- half-starved of a decent meal and any scrap of kindness he can get-- is beyond him. But that's why he's here, isn't it? Sure, he should've leaped out of here weeks ago, but Sam's not going anywhere. Not when Morse is like this.

Putting on the oven gloves, he reaches down, taking the roast chicken and potatoes out and setting them on the countertop to cool, right next to his mom's chocolate chip cookies he'd made earlier (she'd be proud; he knows the recipe by heart now).

Sam tries to tell himself it's just doctor's intuition that makes him turn around again, eyes searching the detective's face for any sign of... well, anything to tell him that the haunted, melancholy look in Morse's eyes is going away. Short of tucking a blanket around his shoulders and staying here with him all night, he's not really sure what else he can do.

Personally, JC stresses me out every time he comes on screen, but I don't mind it when JC fans say fan-typical things like how they like JC because he wears purple, or is grumpy, or they think he's hot, or that they ship x*ch*ng because the cql actors have nice jawlines. They're harmless, fun takes, and while I don't agree with some of them, I see where they're coming from

Hello there anon, vent away as that is what my blog is open for as I love/hate on Jiang Cheng as he is in the plot, as well as all of my beef with what has been done to him for the EN side of the fanbase! I am more than fine listening and engaging with the unsavory "unpopular" discussions of his canon behavior and this goes for anyone of course that needs an open play area. I'll try to engage with what you have sent point by point as succinctly as I can.

[2/?] (some of these are obviously crack, and I am a fan of a few problematic faves). But then there are stans that just have to put other characters down to make JC look good. Like, I think some fans take their freedom of interpretation for granted because most of these takes aren't even labeled 'headcanon,' 'ooc,' or 'crack' anymore. Stans feel that their interpretations are valid, and while they are, valid =/= canon, and they're treating these takes as canon, which becomes popular fanon.

I enjoy Jiang Cheng for what he is, however as I had said it took me another reread to get to my stance of him being the negative mirror to Lan Wangji's positive and my comfort with that for the story once I realized what purpose he served. He is only insofar tragic in regards to his circumstances, but it does not absolve him for what he is at his core (no pun, but I can make a very nice metaphor that even with a piece of Wei Wuxian in him he is still forever unable and unwilling to stand by him equally all while stagnating where as Lan Wangji is able to flourish, grow and mature with nothing of import left from Wei Wuxian in a technical sense). As for ships, I am a little dirty Xicheng whore for fun and can say there is a sense of entertainment for me making it work with two people where one is wildly ignorant and the other wildly rabid. But that is outside of what is established as canon in the work and I always try to keep the two strictly separate due to the skew fanon perpetuates.

3/?] And now, it's not clear what part of the fanon references canon JC or the canon events of mdzs. JC is an asshole; I don't like him as a person, but I do think that he's a complex character motivated by many issues (sup, YeeZY), which makes him fascinating to explore. Unfortunately, erasing his culpability also removes his agency. JC should be allowed to be an asshole character who makes his own decisions even if they're the wrong ones. He has made his own tragedy by constantly casting Wei Wuxian as the villain of his life.

Now thanks to you I will be using YeeZY to forever and now to acknowledge Madam Yu (this is your fault for the new tag). From a standing from storytelling I agree that he is complex in the Jianghu for MDZS. Where in the usual political intrigue of Wuxia, he would be the mustache twirling villain that is outright unforgivable in narration, it is by favor of Wei Wuxian's narration that has an early steeping of empathy for him. And he is not meant to be seen as ultimately sympathetic, the work builds up his hate against Wei Wuxian who tries to rationalize it all several times until he is finally unable to. Jiang Cheng is the antithesis to Lan Wangji and the false bait to get attached to in Wei Wuxian's first life. I will make the note their meeting in Yiling is lukewarm between both as they exchange nothing really in terms of conversation and all pleasantries are left in terms of Jiang Yanli for Wei Wuxian. By this point Wei Wuxian has already switched his yearnings of platonically wanting a part of Jiang Cheng's life, to subconscious romantic inclinations about Lan Wangji and the perceived loss of being in the other's life.

The very point of Jiang Cheng as the deconstruction, is that he has no passion in life despite his apparent exploits because he put a shadow to hang over himself as an excuse to say others think he is not good enough. He has no deeper motivations than pure selfishness by the end of the work and is pure frivolity that he has built up losing the meaning of his sect as a tradition. He had his agency (more than anyone I might add in the work due to his social position) that he used to build his reputation as a passive rich sect leader that has little to do with civilian problems.

4/?] And I think a JC, somehow, that realizes that he did something wrong and is working hard to change for the better and gain self-actualization to become that UWU best jiujiu the stans want him to be, who is ready to talk (not yell at) with WWX, apologize to him, and create a better, healthier relationship with him is a much more powerful reconciliation and happy ending than 'everyone is wrong and mean and they all apologize to JC, which magically gets rid of all his issues'.

He is forced out of culpability in reconciliation because simply put, his audience do not like the reality that relationships fray and dissolve with no further resolution other than we as adults both need to move on for safety and good health. It is not acceptable in real life and fiction is allowed to place that also in it's thematic relationships. He has a small, small spark of recognition at the end of the main story, however he himself seems to choose to ignore it, as change is hard and he has never taken to that well as was foreshadowed with his dogs and the idea of sharing a space with Wei Wuxian. To write this is an awful lot of work into his psyche which is not a nice place, he is a terrible being and downplaying that to make a sugar sweet person does not work instantaneously. He is the one responsible for the entire fallout with Wei Wuxian and he hysterically realizes that even as he tries to continue to blame Wei Wuxian.

The issue that I have with his current stan culture, is that they already view him as something he is not. They play at bicycle with all of the other protagonists that have positive traits that they strip as they see fit; Good affirming loving to children adult Lan Wangji, Self-sacrificing ultimately did it all for love and care Wei Wuxian, Hard exterior but softened to who they consider an annoyance Wen Qing, Loyal as partners in their exploits on the field and always have each others back Wen Ning. They even take Jin Guangyao's persona of playing damsel and using that as a positive to soften up Jiang Cheng into something he has never been for anyone for ships.

[5/5] Also, making WWX/WN/LWJ apologize just makes them look better than JC. Like, stans supposedly love JC, so they ahouldn't be lazy and work hard to give him actual character development. Again, I'm sorry for spamming your ask. It just really baffles me about where they get these 'hot' takes (All I'm going to say is that JC was ungrateful, and WN had a reason verbally dismantle him).

They see this, but, they will spin it in any way to excuse Jiang Cheng due to the story itself showing that he was in the wrong to everyone he flung accusations at and his hate. No one but him is at fault for his spite as he had gotten his revenge on the ones that had ruined Lotus Pier and killed his parents. His own resentment pitted him against good and well meaning people that he refused to help as he mimicked his mother's words about raising their heads higher out of goodness instead of keeping low and staying self-centered. There is the underlying criticism of taking individual arrogance as self-care at the cost of others. Each point that Wen Ning makes is exactly what Jiang Cheng himself knows as he hated Wei Wuxian for being something he could not be or even wanted to be. Jiang Cheng wants kindness but does not understand that kindness to others needs to be selfless and accept the hurt that can come with that in life. He encompasses the fall from the path of buddhist lifestyle, "The Three Poisons" to Wangxian's "Without Envy" at the stories end.

[6/5] P.S. I'm not saying I want reconciliation fics, but I just feel that if stans want JC to have a happy ending, then I think that he should actively work for it. I think it would be interesting to see what force of nature would push him through a character development because throwing a therapist at him would result in a murder.

They do not think he has to work for it, they say his tragedy is enough, while heaping accusations against Wei Wuxian and saying his own are not enough to absolve him. Something Wei Wuxian has never denied and told all present they are allowed to forever hate him for what he had done in the past, but that they need to find a way to live in a life that is always moving on. He learned that grudges do nothing once they are absolved and it leaves you with hate with nothing else to do with it once that object is gone. In terms of reconciliation, I do not ever think that either want anything other than a distant peaceful out of each other's life set up. Jiang Cheng does not need Wei Wuxian in his life to be satisfied and never has since he used him as the handicap to hide behind to stay angry and miserable. Being without that fallback opens the world far more for him to change than him ever interacting like an old friend with Wei Wuxian ever again, if he ever had the guts to do that.

I forget what episode it was, but what are your thoughts and feelings about the time Eliot broke Parker's pinata? I love Eliot but that was a real dick move. I just wanted to hug Parker and punch Eliot in the nose.

Hmm, honestly? I never really saw it as a dick dick move. Eliot can say or do things that are mean but I don’t consider that to be one of them. Not to that extent anyway. While I ship Parker, Hardison and Eliot romantically, Eliot’s relationship with Parker can sometimes come off as squabbling siblings or like two five year olds on the school playground. Not in a way that would make me ship them platonically. More just that’s their brand of fighting. Parker pokes and prods at Eliot to see what he’ll do. She enjoys pushing his buttons. Sometimes he pushes her away, sometimes he snarks at her and sometimes he just lets her do what she likes.

I mean, if Parker had just come in her with piñata and Eliot had gone up to her and smashed it for no reason because he was tired of seeing it?  Or if she had said “stop” or “no” when Eliot was wrestling with it? Oh man, yeah, I would have been like “wtf???” But Parker has already opened her piñata and is deliberately pouring all the contents on the table and, more importantly, she empties what’s inside onto Eliot/Eliot’s side of the table. Not Sophie’s side or even in the middle, but she deliberately swings her body towards Eliot. Now, while I don’t think that was Parker asking for her piñata to get broken, I do think that was Parker’s way of engaging Eliot in play, like she often does. Eliot and Parker have a very specific rapport and it’s for that reason she does this type of thing only with Eliot. I mean, Parker has literally chucked a crowbar at Eliot’s head before. They are actual children. She knows what’s coming and so does he. (Unfortunately, Eliot is not having a good day, being hurt and forced to work by Nate, so he is not in the mood to have stuff dumped on him.)  They squabble - like they often do - and then he rips the head off, much like a sibling or little kid might when annoyed.

Not that a reaction makes an action okay or not okay but I don’t think Parker is genuinely upset about it either.  Lowkey sad, sure, but not in a way that I, as a viewer, am left properly angry at Eliot beyond “aww dude, no”. Although, yes, I do want to pet Parker, poor lamb, when she makes the wee sad sounds. 

I may be completely wrong and it is a dick move (I mean, did he have to do it? no) but I’ve never read that scene in a bad way because it’s pretty on brand for Parker and Eliot. It’s not an ooc moment for them. Parker knows dumping stuff on Eliot when he’s cranky is going to get some kind of equally cranky response. At this point it’s clearly part of the fun for her since she continues to do it. I mean, this is literally them:

Also because there is no way Eliot would do anything to hurt Parker on purpose. If it turned out he had hurt her and he didn’t realise how much that piñata actually meant to Parker, I am certain he’d be mending it himself or out buying her or making her another one.

That’s just my take though! With different characters who had a different relationship, I might have read it differently.

What expectations do you hold towards your plotting partner:  Well, I tend to be the type that actually fails at coming up with plot ideas. It’s not that I don’t think of anything, but that I’m either too shy or my brain is too exhausted of ideas. So I guess just enthusiasm works for me, since it gives all the same energy! Especially when talking about ships (including platonic and hate ships) between our muses ‘cause that usually helps lead into some potential plots, as I’ll always be up for discussing new stuff for them; like how we want to develop them, where will they go, when will they get there, etc.

When you notice the plotting is rather one-sided, what do you do?:  I’m a bit of too quiet to say anything really, kinda like a pushover. But if I can gain the confidence, I’d prefer to ask what’s going from my partner’s end. If it turns out they’re really not interested then, and I hate to do it, we’ll just drop it. I want us both to be having fun, and if they’re not into it, then it’d be too selfish of me to try and continue it.

How do you usually plot with others, do you give input or leave most work towards your partner?:  Again, I’m pretty terrible at it, so I’m usually a go with the flow type person. So unfortunately, that leaves most the plotting to them, unless my brain decides to wake up. But when I do have an idea and have the courage to, I’ll pitch it to them. Usually my plots end up starting out as some random headcannon between our muses and their ship, and then it falls into the fascination of ‘I wanna rp that now’, just to see it have a story.

When a partner drops the thread, do you wish to know?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. - And why?: I get anxious easily. So whether or not I was really into it, it’s nice to know, and easier on my nerves if it was something I was really into. However, it’s not entirely and outright demand that they do all the time. - What should your partner do when dropping a thread?:  Not required, just preferred that they just let me know.

What could possibly lead you to drop a thread?:  Two things. Disinterest is one, and pretty self-explanatory. Then there’s if I just lack the energy for a certain amount of time, after several attempts to actually reply. I usually hate to drop threads. But if I feel there’s absolutely no way I’ll be able to reply, then I’ll either pm my partner directly or make out a post and tag those I’ve dropped threads with, if it’s multiple. - Will you tell your partner?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS.

Is communication in the rpc important to you?   YES / NO. - And why?:  Even though I’m terrible of communication, I still like to hear from my partners every once and a while. It’s kinda why discord is easier to get a hold of me ���cause, since I have two servers there I mod/admin, I usually check it and will answer there more often. - Are you okay with absolute honesty, even if it may means hearing something negative about you and/or portrayal?:  I wanna say yes, but there’s that anxiety in me that says no. It’s a hit or miss with me. I usually try not to get defensive, and most the time won’t. It’ll just end up making become a bit more cautious, confused, or reclused, depending on what it is; and that’s all ‘cause of anxiety. - Do you think you can handle such situation in a mature way?  YES / NO.

Why do you rp again, is there a goal?:  Mostly to have fun. Also so I can explore my muses and work on my creative writing. When people like what I post too, it makes me extremely happy and excited, wanting to pour out more! So really, not much of a goal other than just share my thought process and ideas.

Wishlist, be it plots or scenarios:  To roleplay and post more stuff for Mizuiro. And to build more relationships of all kinds for my muses, especially my ocs. I’d also like to explore darker themes for a few muses as well, though that’s a bit of a tall order... Not too people can handle or are willing to deep dive, so I’m not sure if that’ll happen really.

Themes I won’t ever rp / explore:  I don’t really have any hard limits. However, I usually refrain from a lot simply for the comfort of others. So I guess there’s quite a bit I won’t ever get into, though I’d like to.

What Type of Starters do you prefer / dislike, can’t work with?: i’m usually good with just about anything. If I’m not, then I’ll inform my partner.

What type of characters catch your interest the most?:  Better question is; what type am I not into? Though truthfully, I’m really into characters with a lot of development, an establish backstory of any kind, and just about any that can capture my heart (which isn’t hard to do btw). I’m not picky and I have very few I truly hate, except for their person rather than the character.

What type of characters catch your interest the least?:  Flat, one-dimensional types with very little development or their own story. I like seeing the ins and outs, the positives and negatives of a character. I want them to put me on a roller coaster of emotions, since that’s life in a nutshell. If they can’t, then I’ll lose interest quickly. Also mary sues/gary stues. Characters that just don’t make sense or follow the universe’s logic are also a major turn off.

What are your strong aspects as rp partner?:  Oh boy... I guess my dedication and love for my muses’ ships. It’s not much, but only thing I can think of. I also try to keep an open mind, be as understanding as possible and to support my partner wherever I can.

What are your weak aspects as rp partner?:  My inability to reply to drafts that have been sitting for a couple of weeks. I want to reply, and yet, as soon as I open the draft and get to work, my brain blanks. It’s really frustrating.

- What could possibly make your Muse interesting towards others, why should they rp with this particular character of yours now, what possible plots do they offer?:  Usually that’s up to the other’s interpretation of the character. But Kaede has some potential, developing surprising friendship despite her division’s reputation. She’s bit of an opposite from her captain and co-lieutenant, probably being the most patient and kindest of the three, as she’s the only one to pursue any friendships. I would say I’d love to find more plots in reference to her backstory, whether some random character she befriends or is enemies with finds out her birth, or she feels to rekindle a past friendship.

- With what type of Muses do you usually struggle to rp with?:   ... I dunno if I really have an answer for that. Kaede’s one of my easiest going muses, unafraid to interact with anyone. She tends to fit in just about anywhere. Though I’m sure this partly due to her being my most developed and being well established. - With what type of Muses do they usually work well with?:  Honestly, I think just about anyone, depending on the scenerio and who they are. That also determines how she approaches and interacts with them.

- What interests your Muse(s) in general:  There’s a list of things. Gardening, social gatherings, her division... She’s also into new experiences, things that are foreign to the Soul Society. - What do they desire, is their goal?:  She simply wants to make her mother proud, to better society if she can, and continue to aid and serve her division. - What catches their interest first when meeting someone new?:  Body language. It’s a trained type of thing, trying to read them by how they hold themselves. How approachable they appear, their intent, etc. - What do they value in a person?:  Depends, as she understands everyone is different. But mostly their determination, honesty, and dedication, even if she’s not the receiver. She can still respect them for it. - What themes do they like talking about?:  Eh... Just about anything, aside from herself. Anything gardening or about flowers is where she’s the most enthusiastic. - Which themes bore them?:  Idle chitchat or small talk. She likes to carry an actual conversation. So trying to ask her about the weather, she’ll more than likely walk away.

- Did they ever went through something traumatic?:  Sort of? There’s a couple things; the discovery of Azashiro’s imprisonment and his crimes, the sudden disappearance of Yoruichi and Kisuke, and the brief encounter with Yhwach’s clone during the war. - What could possibly trigger them?:  Both Azashiro’s imprisonment and Yoruichi and Kisuke’s exile have been resolved, so no. Though to ask her about Azashiro, she’ll be guarded and, depending on the person, defensive. The incident with Yhwach was a literal flash, leaving her physically scarred, but otherwise unfazed. - What could set them off, enrage them?:  Azashiro, yes. Depending on who the person is, obviously. Kisuke is the most notable target of this rage. - What could lead to an instant kill?:  Again, Azashiro, depending on who brings it up and what’s brought up. Mostly, if it targets her mother and threatens to expose them, including her adopted father.

- Is there someone /-thing they hate?:  Yhwach and Aizen. Both have caused a degree of grief in the Soul Society, and even for those outside it. She also hates those that use their position of power for selfish reasons. - Is there someone /-thing they love?:  Her mother and adopted father, and the Shiba clan as a whole. Her division, and her current captain and co-lieutenant, along with her former captain and her brother Yuushirou. She also loves, though won’t admit it often enough, Askin (verse dependent). Kenpachi as well (verse dependent). Any and all her friends, including Kisuke. There’s also a huge soft spot for animals of any kind.

Is your Muse easy to approach?: YES / NO. - Best ways to approach them?:  As long as you’re not a sworn enemy to her or the society, just about anyone’s good to go. Just strike up conversation, ask for a spar, to drink, etc. She isn’t one to simply ignore or dismiss anyone, so long as there isn’t any bad terms between them. - Where are they usually to find?:  In the second division offices or training grounds (sometimes in the onsen), at her home, or strolling or patrolling through the Seireitei.

Something you may still want to point out about your muse?:  Eh... nothing I can think of off the top of my head. Except that, no matter how kind a face she has, she can still be a merciless killer.

Hey, everyone, it’s Marie back at it again with my second character. Meet Lennox Bishop, the Bishop Coven Supreme, who has a quick wit, has a tendency to tell it like it is, and doesn’t exactly know when the “right” time to do anything is. He’s an innovative Supreme and is doing a good job running the Coven, but that doesn’t mean he has his life totally together.

Shadowfalls

The Bishop Coven is originally from a town near Salem, Massachusetts. They fled after their former Supreme and her daughter (Lennox’s mother and sister) were killed. They left behind all the other supernaturals in the area, including another coven of witches in the area.

Lennox is something of a visionary as far as supremes go. He does not guard the Bishop Coven’s secrets as closely as other covens guard theirs, nor does he follow the same traditions. He’s willing to share his coven’s knowledge and skills with other witches and wants to unite all the covens in the city.

Lennox owns and operates ‘Bishops Books and Brews’, which is a coffee shop that doubles as a bookstore. The shop is the type of low-key escape from Coven business that Lennox needs. He tries to keep a pretty laid back vibe in the place, and lets his cat wander around wherever it pleases. He only hires other witches, but they can be from any coven.

Lennox hates the anti-supernatural laws and is extremely fearful of life outside the Shadowfalls city limits. He blames the laws for his mother and sister’s murders, which happened in his home town before he and the coven fled. Currently, he’s channeling all of his fear and anger into making sure his coven is safe inside the city. 

Personality

Lennox does not know how to keep his mouth shut when he has an opinion. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind, even if what he has to say is harsh or unpopular. He isn’t good at sugarcoating things, so if you’re looking for someone to break bad news gently, he isn’t your guy. 

Along with that comes some serious bravery, though. He isn’t afraid of consequences, and if he doesn’t like something, he pushes for change. He isn’t the kind of person who sits around and waits for life to happen to him.

Making change is a process though, especially when it comes to the ancient structure of covens. Even people in his own Coven might regard him as a shit disturber. He wants to innovate and bring the Coven into the future...and all the other Covens too!

He’s a pretty jealous person in most aspects of his life. He isn’t good at sharing and he most definitely is not good at dealing with the frustration that he feels when someone else gets something he wants - whether it’s a deal, an alliance, or even just an apartment.

While his outspoken nature might turn some people away, he is outgoing. He also has a very business-man like air to him when he’s discussing city business.

He’s very intent on making sure that the city comes under control of supernaturals, especially witches, so anyone who threatens that will earn themselves a sharp tongue lashing at the very least.

Aside from his dedication to the Coven, Lennox has a big problem with commitment. His mother and father split when he was a child and he never saw his dad again. Now, all of his family is dead. He’s terrified of being abandoned and making personal commitments that put him in danger of being abandoned. He self sabotages a number of his romantic and platonic relationships on a regular basis.

These commitment issues are a big part of why he wants to do away with the notion of having to ‘marry into’ the coven. He thinks witches are stronger together anyway, so why make such a big deal out of it? 

Lennox is not a fancy person. He uses Bishop’s Books and Brews to conduct most Coven meetings and business, and he lives in a run down apartment in the city.

Other Covens: Lennox is actively trying to align all witches in all covens in the city. This is a radical way of thinking and doing things, so I don’t think it’s a concept many witches will be a fan of or think is a good idea. Lennox will probably try to pitch his concept to as many witches as possible, whether they’re supremes or not, in hope that it’ll catch on. 

Bishop Coven: Lennox treats the coven like they are his family, because really, they’re all he has left. Of course, there’s still room for tension! Some of the coven might like his radical ways of thinking, but that definitely doesn’t have to be the general consensus.

Supernatural Rivals: Lennox is super involved in Shadowfalls politics and wants to play a big part in the government. This supernatural or supernaturals have rivaling political goals. Maybe they’re simply advocating for their species, maybe they have a thing against witches, or we can brainstorm another idea!

Neighbors (both at home and business wise!): Lennox lives in a pretty run down apartment in the city and he has the bookstore/coffee shop. Maybe they’re friendly neighbors, maybe they’re business rivals, maybe they’re flirty neighbors who have been eyeing each other since either one moved in! I’m open to lots of dynamics.

Bro Code: Lennox really needs a guy best friend who will call him on shit, especially when he’s trying to push this friend away. In return, Lennox will absolutely be their for him for better or for worse. They can be any species EXCEPT human. 

One Night Stands and Flings Gone Wrong: Lennox is a commitment-phob and that might never change. He’s sabotaged a number of potential relationships throughout his life, and probably didn’t stop once he moved to Shadowfalls.

What I don't like about k/l shippers (tho I'm one and nowadays I'm wavering away from it) is how they treat keith. they always focus on the latter and treats keet like some joke or idk? I know Keith is somewhat problematic but also like shiro he deserves a break.

See, my thing is–I’m pretty sure there must be k/l content that still maintains Keith’s identity. Making a ship work without compromising either character’s agency is something up to each individual author or artist I think, so there’s nothing inherently bad with k/l. That being said, I’ve certainly noticed a trend in k/l fanon where Keith is just a reward to be given to Lance and the whole focus is on him. And I’ve talked about this a bit before, so I’ll just drop some points from that here real quick:

It kinda seemed to me like k/l fanon was always sorta more centered around Lance while Keith was just sort of his prize? I think it’s kind of because Lance is more relatable to a lot of people so it’s easier for fans to see themselves in his position

After season 2, it seemed a lot of people who liked k/l were mad that Keith got so much screentime and character development, as if it only mattered if either of those things happened in relevance to Lance or k/l and Keith shouldn’t be able to grow and develop on his own

And it made me kind of uncomfortable to see s/k scenes that were dismissed as platonic but then people edited Lance in and claimed the situation was suddenly romantic and these edits were praised as being so much better than the actual writing and well developed character interactions in those scenes we had gotten 

While k/l definitely isn’t the only ship where fanon does this, I will say season 2 fanon definitely gave me the vibe that Keith was meant to be seen and not heard. 

I’ve seen fans hate the BOM episode and even say that watching it was unnecessary, and claim that Keith didn’t deserve to be written beyond the flat, one-dimensional image we had of him.

But at the same time fanon loved Keith in the marmora suit because it made for a pretty picture, but Shiro often got replaced by Lance in fanworks even though it didn’t make sense because it was just “better”

There’s this idea perpetuated in fanon that Keith is just a pretty boy, someone who’s meant to be seen and not heard

 And I feel in a lot of k/l Keith is almost robbed of his agency to just have him act ooc. 

In some fanon k/l I feel like much of Keith’s identity is sacrificed in favor of focusing on Lance. Canon k/l interactions in season 3 are much more preferable to me because you see them each develop as their own person apart from just how they react to each other

As for the second part, I’ve always been kind of confused by that. There’s this thing about characters being “problematic” that really unnerves me. Because no character is flawlessly good, you know? And if they supposedly are, then they’re not a well written character. And you don’t have to constantly be morally upstanding and perfect to be a good person. Keith’s raw emotion, his passion and drive and will to throw himself into a war to protect others–it all defines him. And maybe he’s not the infallible hero, but he’s so much more real, and that means something. He struggles with this anger he carries, yes. 

He loses the one person who showed him unconditional love and support, who never gave up on him. So he lashes out in his grief, he loses himself in sudden outbursts, says things he doesn’t mean. “I don’t want to be the leader! That’s just what Shiro wanted!” it’s something he yells without thinking, because he’s just cut open and hurting–and he doesn’t know where to direct that anger, and it kind of coils in on itself and flares out. But then he quickly sobers, looks horrified at his own words and falls silent. It’s not Shiro he’s mad at. And it’s not his team. Not really. But it still feels like Shiro left and some part of Keith feels almost betrayed at that. It’s an admission that sort of slips out–that Shiro talked about giving up before and Keith resents that. Wishes he had never said that. 

But he’s overcome by volatile galran emotion with no outlet–Shiro was always the one who calmed him before, and he’s struggling to navigate the fallout without him:  

Joaquim: “He latches onto Shiro at times because Shiro’s sort of the only thing that can really calm him down and keep in check.” (source)

Joaquim: “[Keith’s] got this emotional side to him.”

Lauren: “It’s kind of exasperated by the fact that Shiro’s gone. Like he’s having a hard time dealing with it, he doesn’t really know how to feel. And I think he just goes back to that inner part of himself where it’s just—he can’t control his emotions. And that comes from the galra side.” (source)

Keith’s grief isn’t graceful or poetic or quiet understanding as he lets go. His loss is a storm–chaos and rage and broken shards. It’s throwing himself into a fight without concern for his team’s safety because he has nothing left to lose. It’s refusing to move on even if the universe needs him. It’s being reckless and relentless. It’s sitting alone in Black lion, “speaking” to Shiro as his confession. All the while ignoring that he has a whole team willing to listen. 

And of course, I’ve been talking post season 3, but–we can take this mindset and apply it to all of Keith’s actions really. Because all his life, he’s been carrying some kind of grief. He has no family. For a long time, he had no friends. He says everyone else gave up on him. Looking at Keith’s character through that lens, I think a lot of his behavior people would label as “problematic” makes perfect sense. Loss has been a very real part of Keith’s life, his whole life–as opposed to the other paladins who are only just now experiencing it: 

Joaquim: “I mean, he’s experienced loss–in his life, in his childhood. And Shiro is, I think more so than the other characters is his pillar, is like his big bro. So he felt that loss.“(source)

And I think it really says something that, despite all Keith’s suffered, despite how it must have felt like the universe was always conspiring against him, he still wants to do good. He has no family, grew up with no friends, and has to watch Shiro be constantly wrenched away from him. At that point, he shouldn’t feel like he owes the greater good anything. But “everyone in the universe has a family,” and for all of their sakes, Keith still wants to help. I can’t at all see Keith as “problematic.” I think he’s a victim of circumstance who genuinely cares about others and fiercely protects the people he loves. He’s a multidimensional character who has his faults and strengths, and I adore that. And I agree, he and Shiro do deserve a nice break. Someone let them rest please

1. What’s the worst role playing experience you’ve had?

I was in the Rockman.EXE/Megaman NT Warrior fandom a while back and I played the character Injuin Enzan/Chaud Blaze. The was a blog for a genderbent Blues/Protoman. They were great at first and were fun to rp with but there came a point where I hadn’t replied to stuff for a while and they ended up in my inbox screaming at me, demanding that I stop ignoring them because they knew I was online. I immediately blocked them and haven’t talked to them since.

2. What would cause you to leave a fandom?

Toxicity is the main reason. If there are very toxic people or the fandom as a whole is toxic, I can’t handle it and will likely leave if it gets too out of hand.

3. Why did you leave your last fandom?

The last fandom I left because it was toxic and the type to take personal/private issues with other roleplayers and drag it out into the open so the entire fandom could bash on whichever rper was being dragged. I got involved because I wanted to try and de-escalate things, but it didn’t go well. I haven’t been on much on that blog since.

4. What are some things you are tired of seeing in the RPing community?

Again toxicity. I’ve been lucky so far that this fandom hasn’t been toxic to each other. But others like the last one I was in, can be awful about it. I’m happy that there hasn’t been the discourse there has been in other fandoms.

5. Have you ever had to block someone or cut off contact with them?

6. Your view on Mary/Gary sues?

I think it depends from blog to blog. However, I’m not the type to hate on people’s muses that are deemed Mary/Gary Sues. I’m the kind of person who if the person asks how they can improve their muse I will give my input on how to balance things out, but I don’t expect them to make those changes as they are only suggestions.

7. Things that you will not tolerate?

Hate is the biggest thing. I will defend others to the very end if they’re being bullied or getting anon hate or any hate in general. The other thing I will only slightly tolerate is godmodding to a degree. If you’re new to rp or if you’re not sure how to do certain things, there will be some godmodding going on. If it happens I will usually tell my partner about it, unless it’s something unavoidable like my muse it unconscious and you have to move them somewhere they’ll be safe. If I warn my partner and they don’t listen then I may drop a thread without warning.

8. Has anyone hurt/betrayed you?

Not that I can think of off the top of my head. I’ve never actually been one to receive hate so I can’t say.

9. Your view on minors interacting with muns that are older than 18?

As an 18+ mun myself, it really depends on the situation. If there is nothing sexually intimate going on between the muses then that’s fine. However if you are an underage mun and you don’t tell the other mun and do NSFW then that is a betrayal of trust and could get the other mun into serious trouble because if the age of consent is younger in one place doesn’t mean it’s the same elsewhere. As long as there is no sexual acts between the two muses where one mun is a minor and the other isn’t, then it’s alright by me.

10. Your opinion with ships between muses that include a minor and a legal adult?

Okay that depends on the case. If the muses are say 16-17 and 18-20 then I’m mostly okay with this. However if one muse is say 14-16 or under and the other muse is 21+ then there is no way I would be okay with that. Again it also depends on the ship. If the ship is romantic then hell no, but if it’s platonic or familial then that’s okay.

11. Have you ever received anon hate?

Nope.

12. Your opinion on people giving canon characters mental illnesses?

This is another case by case basis. If you can rationally explain why they have the said illness then it’s okay by me. For example, before we found out that Yusaku had PTSD, a lot of his behaviors were very similar to Autism. So using canon behavior to justify a mental illness is fine.

If the mun of that muse has a mental illness and projects it onto their character, that’s fine too. However one thing that sort of bothers me is when a mun gives the canon character a mental illness without either having that illness or using canon signs and behaviors to justify it. The ones who try to romaticize mental illness this way are the ones who bother me.

13. Your opinion on straight shipping?

You mean like shipping a guy and a girl? I’m completely fine with it. It only bothers me when anti-straight shipper say that “this guy” should just die so that “this girl” can be with “that girl” because “this guy” is ruining their ship even when that straight ship is canon.

14. Your opinion on muns making canon characters Trans/ gender fluid etc.?

Until I figured out for myself that I was transgender (female to male), this whole topic made me uncomfortable and I understand that people want diversity and representation. However the issue was taking a canonically cis character (where it was stated they were their canon gender since birth) and forcing them into being trans and seeing evidence in the show where there is none. However I’ve only had one exception to this happen that I feel like a hypocrite for. In another fandom it was widely accepted by almost the entire fandom that this one character was a Female to Male transgender and was actually one of my favorite characters. There was also very little known about the character so it didn’t bother me all that much either so eventually I made my muse (of that character) go from cis to trans. This also gave me the courage to actually come out to my family tbh.

15. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Hate and godmodding as I explained above.

16. How much does it take for you to get angry/upset? How long does it usually last?

I like to think that I’m a pretty chill guy so it takes a lot to bother me when it comes to rp stuff. I’m usually very patient too. If I do get upset it takes about a day or two and a lot of ranting at my sister about it.

Hm. I guess it depends on the person? Also I guess it depends on what you mean by off? I mean sometimes I can tell by writing if our styles will mesh well or if something’s off about it. Or sometimes I can tell if someone is upset by the way they type messages to me so it could be that way too.

19. What’s the worst thing that has happened to you in the rping community (Within an ooc situation)?

The major discourse that happened in the last fandom I was in. That’s probably the worst of it.

My problem is, I’m not on here enough and if I don’t do Yugioh related stuff, a lot of things pertaining more to Playmaker/Yusaku, then I lose touch with my muse and will have a hard time doing stuff. I am sort of binge watching a few episode of VRAINS at a time to get icons for Yusaku and Playmaker so focusing on those help too.

to make you fall in love with me

to say levi is unlucky in love would probably be an understatement—but i love chaos and making my characters miserable, so here we are. anyway, welcome to my second request of many for an incredibly important figure in levi’s love life!

like most of my requests, this is really open. it looks long and intimidating, but i promise it isn’t, i just have a lot of feelings. just a few things though before i get into fun shit! there are basically two requirements when it comes to this character: 

jack (it’s a placeholder name, pls change it) needs to be somehow affiliated with levi’s band, permafrost, and i’ve been imagining him as the drummer tbh. or, alternately, he could be working behind the scenes in some capacity. 

age needs to be somewhere between 25 and 27, if he’s in the band itself. if he’s affiliated with the band, it can be anywhere between 24 to 30, but the closer to levi’s age, the better.

everything else is open—gender (i had someone who is male or masculine aligned in mind writing this, but that's open for discussion), face, etc. just run things by me before you go ahead and do them, that's all i ask. (i also have face suggestions if you’re struggling!)

other things to note before i actually start this request:

these two aren't necessarily endgame per se, but i am definitely looking for something fairly long term? they need to work through all their shit first, but if all goes well and their personalities mesh etc, i could definitely see it going that direction. i just don’t like setting things in stone in case things don’t go according to plan, y’know?

also, i'm in this for the long haul. life takes precedence over rp, but if there's any extenuating circumstances just let me know. i'm super chill just keep me in the loop where possible!

levi and jack have had an on and off thing ever since permafrost started getting successful. initially, it was all very hush hush and they kept it a secret from absolutely everyone, including their friends and family. but it’s been common knowledge now for years that they’re not entirely platonic.

basically, it all started out as a very no strings attached thing, but as the story goes, they got themselves tangled in knots. feelings got involved, and it all got very complicated very fast.

and then, jack ends up in a relationship. and so it’s all called off—for a while, anyway. eventually, they kind of start sleeping together again behind the back of jack’s significant other. 

they finally discuss their feelings, and get everything out in the open, and jack is planning to leave his partner so he and levi can finally be ~happy and all that nonsense.

but for whatever reason (maybe he’s in the closet? maybe he’s afraid of ruining what they already have?) he’s taking his sweet time about leaving his partner, and levi gets a little impatient and basically just... gives up on it. writes jack off as the one that got away, tries his best to return to being friends.

then levi meets gemma atwood, and in may of 2015, enters into a relationship with her. and there’s definitely still a part of him hung up on jack? but he also definitely has feelings for gemma as well, and he’s happy with her, so he makes it crystal clear to jack that this is it. they’re done. 

of course, this isn’t until after jack breaks up with his partner and rocks up on levi’s doorstep expecting them to be able to pick up where they left off. #awkward.

anyway, gemma and levi date for over a year, and as i said, levi definitely didn’t forget about jack. but by the time jack got his shit together and broke up with his partner, levi already had the beginnings of a good, and more importantly, uncomplicated thing with gemma, so he was like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ you’re too late pal.

fast forward to october of 2016 though and gemma basically breaks levi’s heart and for a while there levi’s just like... very perplexed and conflicted about everything, i guess. 

he writes a lot of sad songs in this time, and starts a solo project on the side. levi’s always had many musical talents ever since he was a kid, but because bass was what permafrost needed, that’s what he ended up doing. (and he loves it and wouldn’t trade it for the world, don’t get me wrong. but also, especially if jack is actually in permafrost, levi needed a creative outlet separate from all that in which he could vent his feelings about gemma and jack through pretty sounding, yet incredibly sad metaphor-ridden lyrics. basically his side project is the in universe equivalent of hozier, but that’s getting wildly off topic.)  

i haven’t really done a whole lot of thought as to what happens to the jack and levi saga after that or where it will go (hopefully, once they work out their shit, they might be able to start a happy and healthy relationship together) but inevitably, it’s going to be all aboard the angst train for a while there.

     yes but as of right now i practice ship exclusivity in the sense that, if i’m shipping with one muse, i won’t ship with other muses of the same character. i think in very rare cases i’ll be open to bending this rule BUT only if the first person involved in the ship with yusuke is 100% comfortable with it and i sure as hell will never pressure them to be comfy with it.

    speaking romantically, i mentioned p5tag/yusuke, ryuji/yusuke before… so, in addition to those… i loooove mako/ann so much. so much. they give me life!!!!!  ;___; they have an awesome dynamic. shiho/ann is also mega good, as is p5tag/haru. i love shipping so i’m open to more ships, too! those are just some of my favorites right now.      in terms of platonic/familial stuff - i mostly rp for that sort of content and i love phantom thief interactions. for yusuke, i’m the most interested in exploring platonic stuff with haru and futaba since there are a lot of unexplored similarities between those two and yusuke in canon... and i’d also really like to have akechi interactions in the general sense, because i feel like those two could potentially make for an interesting duo. but, again, i’m certainly open to and enthusiastic about platonic stuff with every single confidant character lmao.

12. FINALLY, HOW DOES ONE SHIP WITH YOU?

     in terms of Winning Yusuke’s Heart: be willing to respect his eccentricity, support his Lifestyle and interests, etc. just keep an eye on him, you know. despite how he might appear, he can be pretty unhealthy and can keep a lot of painful stuff hidden away. earning his trust and supporting him when hes in a shitty place will always impact him on a really profound level. as for me, just be patient and respectful of my boundaries.

okay, so, since I'm basically incapable of replying to most threads right now, I'm going to write down something that isn't important for you to read but I want to have in my blog, because there is soooo much 'world-building' going on ooc sometimes that it's weird not to share it here, at least for me. And also because most... let's call them sub-verses/aus after s3 come from it

(because I discussed them so much in the past with @siinfvl )

so, there is my usual canon verse: Jemma is dating Fitz, she was nearly destroyed during season 2 by everything that happened, season 3 partly helped her solidifying her (negative) view of herself while also slowly bringing her to fight back against the world, to snap back against people more, to think she could take down enemies, but also more trauma happened and she didn't have much time to process it. Then she started working for Mace, focused her attention on raising ranks, actually liked being this... not double-agent but still someone who had the ability and means to keep people safe while simultaneously playing the guy she didn't trust (sorry, Mace. I loved you. But she didn't know you and expected the worst.) and also had months of nothing too violent or traumatic happening, had Fitz there a lot before he started seeing Radcliffe more, and she started building herself back together. Sometimes she still had fallouts, obviously, bad old habits die hard, and she's still not all that healthy/stable (sure as hell the end of season 4B and season 4C was pure torture) but she's still kind of hopeful, feels strong enough to make it; she became more confident, she enjoyed giving orders, she was still hurt when she realized May thought she was really turning her back on the team for the new Director - it brought back bad feelings from season 2 when Fitz thought he had to protect Daisy from her - but she was rational enough to also know she had pushed the others to believe she was really following Mace even if it meant throwing them to the wolves. It was her cover working. (Still, she's petty enough to bring it up eventually, every now and then. She's not the most fair person.) I'm ignoring the space plot until we know more, but when I write she's going to be somewhere between falling apart because of LMD and the framework and fighting hard to keep going because she believes she can. But she's also halfway between being back to seeing herself as unable to help the people she loves and seeing herself as a protector and embracing her vindictiveness against those who hurt her loved ones.

and then there is Jemma who hasn't dated anyone whether because she and Fitz were always platonic or some other reason, and she's much, MUCH more broken. Not because she needs romance to be happy, but because having a boyfriend would have kept at least one person very close to her, and also her romantic notions brought her to open up more to at least Fitz in the other situation, while this way she went back to her usual swallowing down feelings and dealing with issues by herself, and physical contact is also a good way for her to feel comforted and she didn't have much of it either. She'd have started the pushing away first and people would have respected it without exceptions, but that would have left her with no encouragements of any sort, alone with her self-hatred that never completely left. And then, once s3 was over, just like she didn't explain to May or the others what her intentions with Mace were, probably to avoid trouble with polygraphs, she would have kept everybody including Fitz in the dark, she would have been playing that part and spending way too much time alone with herself again, and her dark thoughts too, after everything that happened with Hive and to Lincoln and to Daisy, and being in that role would have solidified some self-worth issues. That, and she would have been more reckless, would have gone to more field missions, she might have taken an apartment all for herself earlier. All ways in which she would have not only isolated herself more but pushed herself to be 'tougher' and to pull it together alone, and even if Fitz as her best friend was more than willing to support her she would have set in motion a chain of events that would have just resulted in her being more like s1 May to most people, and to be softer to her team but still very repressed and, again, reckless with her life.

and then, the worst, verses in which again she wasn't dating anyone (Fitz and Jemma were always platonic or he never confessed his feelings) Ward never betrayed them or in any case wasn't in Maveth, and Hive came back as Will. In those verses, you can add potential side-aus I wrote like 1) having to face Hive in Will's body which is worse, and shooting him which is WORSE. even if they had been platonic, it doesn't matter. 2) potential AUs where Hive was influenced by Will's memories, and might have pulled an Aida wanting to keep Jemma with the intention of turning her inhuman (Radcliffe would have kept working to make at least her more than a Primitive but nothing happened) and if Jemma tried to play along to keep him from hurting people, even if she didn't have to do anything but just act like she agreed with him, you can add more trauma and self-hatred 3) things going like canon more or less but then Jemma left right after Daisy (or Jemma leaving due to the second point there, and not telling the others what happened). But in any case, whether she leaves or stay in SHIELD, this is the worst case scenario in which she's not just reckless with her life but openly angry that she's still there, she'd have tried to reach the quinjet before Lincoln and Daisy, and failed, and is very, very angry. Training too. She's a mess.
